Official says 400 unaccounted for in Taiwan storm

Monday, August 10, 2009
TAIPEI, Taiwan – An estimated 400 Taiwanese are unaccounted for after a mudslide spawned by Typhoon Morakot struck their isolated mountain village, a police official said Monday, and a newspaper quoted a resident as saying as many as 600 were buried.
Morakot dumped up to 80 inches (two meters) of rain on some communities over the weekend before moving on to China, where it forced the evacuation of nearly 1 million people along the east coast. Earlier it had struck the Philippines, leaving at least 22 dead.
It has now been downgraded to a tropical storm.
Speaking to The Associated Press, a Taiwanese police official who identified himself by his surname, Wang, said about 100 people have been rescued by military helicopter or avoided Sunday morning's mudslide in southern Shiao Lin village.
One of the rescued villagers, Lin Chien-chung, told the United Evening News that he believes as many as 600 people were still buried by the mud.
"The mudslide covered a large part of the village including a primary school and many homes," he was quoted as saying. "A part of the mountain above us just fell on the village."
He did not explain the apparent discrepancy between his estimate of deaths and the policeman's smaller estimate of people still missing.
The village was still cut off from the outside world Monday evening, after flood waters destroyed a bridge about 8 miles (12 kilometers) away. Military helicopters have dropped provisions in the area and rescued survivors.
Taiwan's official death toll from Morakot stands at 14. Another 51, not including the people in Shiao Lin, are listed as missing.

At least 12 dead, many missing in Pacific storms

Monday, August 10, 2009
TOKYO - Two powerful storms have slammed into eastern Asia, leaving at least 12 dead and hundreds missing.
Typhoon Etau plowed into Japan's west coast on Monday, bringing heavy rain that triggered floods and landslides. At least 12 people were reported dead and another 10 missing.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Morakot spawned a mudslide in a mountainous village in Taiwan, a police official said, leaving an estimated 400 people unaccounted for.

The Taiwanese official, whose surname was Wang, said about 100 people had been rescued by military helicopter or otherwise avoided the impact of Sunday morning's mudslide in Shiao Lin village in the south of the island.
Monday's United Evening News quoted one of the rescued villagers, Lin Chien-chung, as saying he believed that 600 people were buried in the mudslide and "that it covered a large part of the village."
Taiwan's official death toll from Morakot stands at 14. Another 51 — not including the people in Shiao Lin — are listed as missing.
As the storm approached mainland China, nearly 1 million people fled to safety on the country's eastern coast.
Earlier, Morakot hit the Philippines and was blamed for at least 22 deaths there.

Silent gunman's Pa. health club shooting kills 4

BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. – Investigators were trying to piece together the motive of a gunman who walked into an exercise class in suburban Pittsburgh and fired dozens of shots, killing three women and himself and injuring nine other women, authorities said.
Two women and the man believed to be the shooter died at the scene Tuesday night and another woman died on the way to a hospital, Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said at a news conference in the parking lot of the LA Fitness center in Collier Township early Wednesday.
Moffatt said police were not sure who the target of the shooting was but that the gunman went into the health club planning to shoot several people — firing "multiple" weapons "indiscriminately," Moffatt said — and did not say anything before unleashing a burst of bullets.
"He walked right into the room where the shootings occurred as if he knew exactly where he was going," Moffatt said.
The violence rocked Collier, a bedroom community of about 5,300 residents near Interstate 79, some eight miles southwest of downtown Pittsburgh.
Moffatt said the gunman was a member of the health club and had identification but that police needed to check fingerprints and speak to his family to confirm his identity. Moffatt said police recovered at least two guns from the scene and that a note was found in the shooter's duffel bag, but he would not say whether the shooter had written it.
"I don't think anyone could have stopped him," Moffatt said.

The gunman walked in the room, turned off the lights and, at first nobody knew what was happening, said Stacey Falk, 26, of Bridgeville, who was in the class.
"All of us girls were just ducking behind each other and it was just, you know, I was behind a girl, one of the girls in front to get hit, and when he was in the opposite corner shooting, I booked it," she told WPXI-TV. Loretta Moss, 44, of McDonald, said she was exercising on a treadmill when she heard a popping noise. "I didn't pay any attention, and the next minute, people were screaming," said Moss, who had come to the gym Tuesday night for the first time in a couple of weeks. She said she then heard more pops. "There was like a whole spray of them. I'd say about 15 altogether, and then people started screaming and yelling and started running out the building," she said.
"We laid down, and then after the last set of ... gunshots, we got up, and someone said run."
Moss said she then saw two young women bleeding, one shot in the leg and one in the shoulder. She said she checked on the pulse of the lady shot in the leg.
"She was screaming, 'It's burning, just please call the ambulance,'" Moss said.
Richard Walker of Tulsa, Okla., who is in the area working on oil rigs, was playing basketball near the exercise room when he heard shots.
"The next thing I know, everybody's going, 'Run, run,'" he said. He said heard about 12 shots before he started moving and another eight or nine as he was leaving the building. He led a woman who had been shot in the thigh outside the building about 50 yards.
"She just kept saying, 'He's gonna kill me.'" Walker said she didn't elaborate.
The fitness center, which opened last year, is in a strip mall called the Great Southern Shopping Center, where a few businesses were destroyed in a 2006 fire. The fitness center said in a statement: "Each of us in the LA Fitness family are shocked and saddened by the senseless acts of violence that took place."

26 hurt as turbulence diverts U.S.-bound jet

updated 1:24 p.m. ET, Mon., Aug 3, 2009

A Continental Airlines jet carrying 179 people from Brazil to Texas hit severe turbulence over the Atlantic early Monday, injuring at least 26 — including four seriously — and forcing an emergency landing in Miami, officials said.
One passenger said he felt Continental Flight 128 drop without warning while flight attendants were in the aisles. Some were thrown against the roof.
Houston-based Continental said there were 168 people and 11 crew on the Boeing 767. The airline released a statement that said the fasten seat belt sign was illuminated at the time and that about 28 passengers were treated in Miami.

What you talkin' bout, Willis? Sears Tower renamed

By CARYN ROUSSEAU, Associated Press Writer - Thu Jul 16, 6:11 am ET

CHICAGO - One of the world's most iconic skyscrapers has long tempted Chicago visitors to squint, crane theie necks and try to see the tip of the country's tallest buiding. But starting Tuesday, Sears Tower will be gone.

Sort of. Its black, block-like architecture and towering rooftop spikes will remain, but the widely recognized name it carried for three decades will be pushed out by a British company.

Willis Tower will be introduced to Chicago by mayor Richard M. Daley and others on Thursday during a renaming ceremony hosted by Willis Group Holdings. The London-based insurance brokerage secured the naming rights as part an agreemet to least 140,000 square feet of space, and has said it plans to bring hundreds of jobs to the city.

High rise brought to its knees?

I was in what I thought was a high rise last night in my dream. I was playing basketball on the floor where the observation deck was at. That was pretty odd and most likely doesn't have anything to do with the upcoming crisis. Suddenly I realized that the building was teeter-tottering. I figured it was just the usual movement that a building experiences. But then it started to bend a little too much. Suddenly I realized that the whole building was moving. Now as you know dreams can be pretty odd at times because not only did the building move as if we were driving down the street but it eventually toppled over. After we landed I noticed a whole bunch of money (huge amounts of change) on the ground. I was getting ready to pick it up but my alarm went off and woke me up! Ugh!!! I'm thinking that a high rise will be replaced, displaced or something major will happen with a world known high rise building. Money will defintely have something to do with it. This is a puzzling one!

Ridiculous...

This must be the month for airplane incidents... here we go again. Expect to see another airplane incident in the next week. I don't think it will be a crash. In my dream I see a large airliner landing (yep, its true) without crashing. However, there must be something wrong with it. Trees also surround the runway so it probably won't happen in an area that is flat or arid. The interesting thing is that I witnessed the whole incident while travelling in a military helicopter. Hmm.. expect to see some sort of military helicopter crash too. I guess I'm slowly proving that my dreams are NOT just coincidence. Especially when you see both of these events come to fruition. Mark the date - Sunday, July 12, 2009. As expected... my premonitions ALWAYS come true.

LeBron gets dunked by Xavier player!

LeBron gets dunked on by Xavier player, confiscates all video

It was assumed he was called "King James" because he reigns on the basketball court. But maybe LeBron James earned that nickname due to his tyrannical ways (in dealing with embarrassment).
On Monday, Jordan Crawford, a sophomore at Xavier (by way of Indiana), reportedly dunked on LeBron during a pick-up game at the LeBron James Skills Academy. Garry Parrish of CBSSports.com wrote that one high school player said, "it was bad". (We can only assume he meant "bad" in the Michael Jackson sort of way.)
LeBron must have agreed, because he had Nike officials confiscate the two videos that were taken of the dunk. (Parrish blames Nike, but reading between the lines it seems like the censorship was orchestrated by LeBron himself.)

A pro ball player gets juked!

Yep, its true. Some basketball star is going to eat some humble pie. In my dream I was playing basketball with a bunch of pro ball players and this young kid was taking it to the hoop on everyone. What a weird dream but fun for a change. I have no idea what this means but I guess something is going to happen with a pro basketball star in the next few days. Watch and see. I dreamt it. It will happen.

PARIS - A submarine scouring the Indian Ocean on Sunday detected the signal beacons of the two black boxes from a Yemenia Airways flight that crashed off the Comoros Islands, the French aviation agency said. Plans were under way to retrieve the boxes within days, an official from Yemen said.

Military blocks runway to keep Zelaya away

Zelaya Blocked From Landing in Honduras After Supporters Shot

By Andres R. Martinez and Steven Bodzin
July 5 (Bloomberg) -- A plane carrying deposed President Manuel Zelaya was blocked from landing in Honduras as he tried to enter the country and resume power. He vowed to return as the jet he was traveling in headed to Nicaragua.
At least one person was killed near the airport in the capital, Tegucigalpa, as security forces blocked the runway with trucks and clashed with demonstrators. Six people were injured, five by gunshots, according to aid workers at the scene. Telesur, a television network owned by Venezuela’s government, reported that at least two Zelaya supporters were killed.
“Stop this massacre in the name of God,” Zelaya said in an interview on Telesur as his plane circled the airport.

July 5: TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras - Ousted President Manuel Zelaya was kept from landing at the main Honduras airport Sunday because the runway was blocked by groups of soldiers with military vehicles, some of them lined up against a crowd of thousands outside. His Venezuelan pilot circled around the airport and decided not to risk a crash.
Zelaya instead landed in Nicaragua on his way to El Salvador, and vowed to try again Monday or Tuesday in his high-stakes effort to return to power in a country where all branches of government have lined up against him, including the military that shot up his house and sent him into exile in his pajamas a week earlier.

Plane Circling

Its time for another plane incident. I don't think the plane will crash but will experience some type of incident which will force it to "circle" or something... I can't really call this one right now.

Marine Incident??

Last night I was on a submarine (in my dream) with the captain of the ship. We were getting ready to set sail (on a sub?? haha). Anyway as we were leaving we started scraping the bottom of the sea (harbor?). It was actually kind of funny because I looked out (if thats possible from a sub) and watched as our rudder pulled us along the sand. Then the sub started to roll and the captain got crushed. That was weird. Okay, so what does this mean? There will be some type of naval incident in the coming days. It will probably be a submarine of some sort. As usual though, I can't seem to nail down the "type" of vessel. However, as "always", my premonitions are correct! Start counting the days. Within the next 7 days you'll see some type of naval incident that will make world news.

Airplane Crash

Prepare for an airplane crash. I had a dream last night that an aircraft crashed. It looked like some type of fighter jet. As usual I can't seem to nail down the type of aircraft, which could be a commercial airliner. However, my dreams always come true as predicted. Within the next few days expect to see an aircraft crash.

6 more months

I'd like to say that I enjoy serving in the Middle East but I'm just about burned out. The longer I'm here the more I realize that I've missed too many memories with my family while making little or no impact with these people. Of course, there have been many improvements in the lives over here. However, without the U.S. military holding ground this country will go right into the shitter once we leave. I've never met so many lazy, unmotivated people in all my life. A 2 hour day is a typical work-day for most of the people I've worked with. I'm on the groun 16 hours a day, 7-days a week. I get so angry when I try to train an Iraqi and two hours into training they complain that they are too tired and need the day off. We have to lead them into combat zones. They need to be prodded to take any initiative. The only people who are even remotely motivated are the terrorist organizations we fight against daily. I'm tired of it. This is a losing proposition and as soon as we leave this country is screwed. I'm ready to go home. Six more months and my days in the Middle East are over. I can't wait!

Brazil river plane crash kills 24

Air authorities investigate a plane crash which killed 24 in Brazil
Twenty-four people, most from the same family, have died after the plane they were travelling in crashed into a river in the Brazilian state of Amazonas.
Four others swam to safety as the plane sank in the River Manacapuru.
The pilots had reportedly contacted air traffic control a short distance from their destination of Manaus to say they were turning back.
The twin-engined aircraft, which took off from Coari, then disappeared from radar, apparently during heavy rain.
A local fire service official was quoted by Brazil's TV Globo as saying the pilots had been trying to reach a local airport, but the plane fell short by 500m.
Four passengers who were sitting at the rear of the plane managed to open an emergency door to escape. All were said to be in a good condition.
The dead people were recovered from inside the plane. They included at least 18 members of the same family and several children, officials said.
The bad weather in the region had hampered the rescue effort in the murky waters.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
The plane involved in the accident was a twin-engine aircraft built by the Brazilian company Embraer.

Massive Sink Hole?

Heres a cool phenomenon. I just had the wildest dream. I was near some type of lake or reservoir. While I was standing there a sink hole opened up and as it did I was near the edge of the lake and was caught in the flow. I was going to be sucked down into the hole while a friend or someone reached for my hand and kept me drowning. It was pretty wild! Whatever happens it will have to do with people not being able to escape from some type of water accident. I don't know where it will happen but as always be sure to watch the news and check the date of this post.

Perhaps yoSeeing the Future out.....

Hello from the Middle East

Well, I've been stuck in the Middle East for the past 10 months and I've decided to stay here for another 6 months. I've been gone from this site for years but I haven't forgotten. I left because honestly I just didn't have anything to contribute to this blog. I've continued to journal since the last time I blogged, mostly dreams. I was a little upset at the way people joked about my dreams once I decided to open up. As I said in the past I dream about things and then they happen. As proof I'm going to start re-blogging my dreams before they happen. I think rather than writing mushy stuff I'd rather just tell you what to expect. I just woke up. It's 2 o'clock in the morning on Sunday. While I was sleeping I was in a dream that I can't remember but I do remember hearing a womans voice screaming. Everywhere I turned, just screaming. Then I found myself driving down some city streets and began to hear louder screams. I turned a corner and saw people trying to save someone who was trapped under a car. I think the car was on fire. The persons head was crushed and people were crying. It was awful. I woke up and found that it spooked me so much that I can't sleep. So I looked out the window, walked around outside for a few minutes, prayed and then decided to re-start my blog. I'll post the actual accident in a few days when it happens. Until then, live your life because you never know when your number will be called.

Another Powerful Earthquake strikes Indonesia

By ANTHONY DEUTSCH, Associated Press Writer 18 minutes ago
PADANG, Indonesia -

The second powerful earthquake in as many days shook western Indonesia Thursday, collapsing buildings in a coastal city and triggering tsunami alerts around the region.
At least nine people were killed and 49 injured in the twin tremors, which caused tall buildings to sway in at least three countries.
On Wednesday, an 8.4-magnitude earthquake shook Southeast Asia. That tremor triggered a small non-destructive tsunami off the coastal city of Padang on Sumatra, the Indonesian island ravaged by the 2004 tsunami disaster. A tsunami warning was issued for wide areas of the region and nations as far away as Africa.
Thursday's magnitude-7.8 quake rattled the same area of Sumatra and caused extensive damage in Padang.
"Many buildings collapsed after this morning's quake," Fauzi Bahar, the mayor, told El Shinta radio. "We're still trying to find out about victims."
Thousands of frightened people piled in trucks or sought shelter on high ground.
Rafael Abreu, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado, said Thursday's quake did not appear to be an aftershock to the temblor the day before. But the centers of both were close together.
"We are not calling it an aftershock at this point. It's fairly large itself. It seems to be a different earthquake," Abreu said.
